March News - Lake Desire Community

March 31 Updates

1. New: Group Mailboxes option for Lake Desire – We are currently discussing group mailbox options with the Renton Post Office. There have been many mail thefts in our area over the years, and they continue even as recently as a few weeks ago. We have enough information and support now from the USPS local contact to set up a neighborhood informational meeting for next Monday, April 7th at 7pm at the Clubhouse and discuss details.

We need to make this happen rather quickly, so if you are interested in this and can help to coordinate houses around your part of the lake, please email staffordlkdesire@gmail.com or call 206-498-1308 as soon as possible. We will follow up in a few days with an estimated price (our best guess so far is a one-time fee of $125 per mail slot). Thank you to Kristin Stendera and John Madden for getting this process going.

Participation in the group mailboxes is optional. If you would like to keep your existing mailbox that is fine.

2. Other Upcoming Lake Desire Events –do you have your calendars marked for these events coming up at the Lake Desire Community Clubhouse?

  • Thursday, April 3rd at 7pm - Lake Desire Aquatic Weed Control Steering Committee Meeting Open to all those who are interested, this is an update on Weed Abatement on the lake. We will discuss:

  • Volunteer needs for this summer (sign posting, surveying, purple loosestrife flower removal in September)
  • Training and transitioning the purple loosestrife spraying to local lake residences (how to get herbicide licenses, permits, equipment, herbicide, and training).
  • Any other aquatic weed related questions or issues folks might have

The meeting will probably be an hour or so. No need to RSVP, but feel free to contact me if there is anything you want to add to the agenda. Looking forward to seeing you, from Ben Peterson. Email ben.peterson@kingcounty.gov

3. Landslide in Oso, Washington – Looking for ways to help after the landslide in Oso and Darrington? See below for some information.
Please check the Emergency and Disaster Relief or our interactive map sections of nonprofits to see all organizations that provide these services.  If you are interested in donating or volunteering we encourage you to contact the organizations directly by clicking on the links below.

We have confirmed that the following organizations are providing services or on alert:

  • American Red Cross - Snohomish County -  Operating 2 emergency shelters in Snohomish County, operating Safe & Well Registry, providing mental health services, feeding first responders and evacuees, more as the situation develops. Two shelters have been opened and staffed by the Red Cross to aid those displaced by the mudslide. Saturday night had a total of 28 individuals that slept overnight between the two shelters. This lodging will be made available for as long as needed with an additional 3 on standby, should needs change. Currently, the Red Cross is reporting it has the resources it needs both in-kind and financially to support this specific effort. However, there is now a need for future disasters like this one.

    • For more information on the effort: Click here
  • Northwest Harvest -  In addition to regular food bank shipments, NW Harvest will be sending an truckload of specific requested food items: fresh produce, snack items that can be eaten on the go, fruit, dairy and foods that require minimal or no cooking.  This has been a month-long drive, but any cash donations collected during that time will go to support this special response.
  • Snohomish County Volunteer Search and Rescue HRT -  On day one we were the first helicopter on scene and performed 8 helicopter hoist extractions to rescue victims from the mudslide. Search and Rescue volunteers continue to be deployed assisting in the effort.
  • The Soup Ladies -  Providing warm meals to the first responders on the scene. Have moved operations to Snohomish County.

On Alert if needed:

  • Seattle Humane Society -  Efforts are coordinated with the local chapter of the American Red Cross. In the event that they get called to assist, families that are displaced by a natural disaster, like the current land-slide tragedy near Arlington, may take their companion animal to Seattle Humane for temporary shelter.
